Teens Are Using DIY Braces From Etsy, Causing Permanent Dental Damage, Dentists Warn

In a troubling new trend, teenagers are turning to Etsy to purchase bedazzled "fashion braces" for around $50 and are then supergluing these makeshift orthodontic devices onto their teeth. While these DIY braces may seem like a fun and affordable fashion statement, dental professionals are raising alarms about the serious, irreversible damage being caused.

The issue, dentists say, lies in the use of superglue to affix the braces. The glue, which is not meant for dental use, can strip away the enamel—the hard, protective outer layer of the teeth. Unlike other parts of the body, enamel does not regenerate once it's gone, leaving teeth vulnerable to decay and other damage.

"We’re seeing an increase in teenagers with severe dental issues as a result of these homemade braces," says Dr. Lisa Thompson, a pediatric dentist in New York City. "In many cases, the damage is so extensive that we need to resort to veneers, which can cost thousands of dollars."

Parents are being urged to monitor their children’s activities and educate them about the potential risks. What might start as a playful attempt to mimic a fashion trend could lead to significant dental health problems and costly treatments in the long run.
