COSTCO SHOPPERS SPEND $1.75 PER MINUTE, STUDY REVEALS
Costco is known for offering its customers great value on bulk items, but a recent study reveals that every minute spent inside the store comes at a cost. According to a joint Instagram post by business news outlet Morning Brew and Phil Andrews of the YouTube channel @maxinomicsmb, the average shopper spends about $1.75 per minute while wandering the aisles of Costco.
Andrews explains that most shoppers spend an average of 37 minutes inside the store, which results in a typical bill of around $64.75. "It's why food samples are placed in the back, taking at least 30 seconds to walk to," Andrews said, noting that the layout encourages distractions, with shoppers frequently adding more to their carts. "And with no signs to tell you where anything is, it becomes a bit of a treasure hunt."
Many Costco shoppers, however, admit to spending far more time in the store. Commenters on the post said they often spend much longer than 37 minutes shopping, with one quipping that they "spend 37 minutes in each aisle." Another remarked that their family easily spends up to two hours in the store, which could bring their total bill to as much as $210, based on Andrews’ calculations.
Andrews also noted that Costco has the longest "dwell time" – the amount of time customers spend in the store – compared to other major retailers like Target and Walmart. Part of this can be attributed to the lack of curbside pickup or delivery options, forcing customers to shop in-store.
Costco’s design and layout, it seems, contribute to making each shopping trip a longer, more expensive experience than initially expected.
