CHICAGO — A recent study by the University of Chicago forecasts a dramatic increase in the number of ghost towns across the United States by the year 2100. Utilizing population projection models, researchers have identified that major cities such as Detroit, Cleveland, and St. Louis could potentially face significant depopulation, transforming them into modern ghost towns.

The study further predicts that up to half of all U.S. cities could lose at least a quarter of their current populations. The only exceptions anticipated are Hawaii and the District of Columbia, which are expected to either grow or maintain their population levels. This projection highlights potential future challenges in urban planning and population distribution.
